NOTES BY CLEO M. AND G. RYLAND SCOTT, JR in the late 1950’s

PAIR OF SEVRES URNS. 1804.

These are a part of the Friedburg collection and they are exceptionally fine quality. They are of the typical empire shape.

The mark was used only in the year 1804. It is hard paste which by this time had entirely replaced the earlier pate tendre. It will be remembered that Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned Emperor in I804. While the Sevre factory had seen some bad times during the revolution by 1800 under the wise directorship of Brouguiart the factory began to prosper again. Only hard paste (pate dure) was made from this time on and Napoleon put the government back of the project.
